The Story of Bird Market Hong Kong
In the early 1960s, many local bird lovers kept songbirds as a hobby and liked to go to tea houses or restaurants together with their feathered friends so that they could enjoy dim sum and hear the birds singing at the same time. A majority of them used to gather at a tea house in Shanghai Street, Mong Kok. After the closing down of the tea house, those bird lovers moved to the nearby Hong Lok Street for gathering. There were only about 10 hawkers selling grasshoppers at the beginning. Later, the street attracted more people to sell birdcages, birds, grasshoppers and bird food. The Hong Kong Bird Market flourished in the 1980s with over 80 stalls and has become one of the famous tourist attractions in Hong Kong. However, due to an urban renewal project, the original bird market was demolished in the 1990s. The former site has been transformed into a new landmark in Mongkok – Langham Place, a shopping mall and commercial complex. Bird Market Hong Kong has been relocated to the present location since 1997.
